Recipients Chosen based on Academic Achievements, Participation in Extracurricular Activities and Leadership in the Community
Four students will begin the trek towards higher education this fall, with some help from UPS. Katie Mattina, Brian Bourgeois, Alexander Savoury, and James Le-Goff, all children of UPS employees, will head to universities and colleges across Canada with the financial support of The UPS Foundation's James E. Casey Scholarship and George D. Smith Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded to children of UPS employees who show excellent academic promise and involvement in their community.
"UPS believes in lifelong education and invests in the future of its employees and the communities in which it operates," said Mike Tierney, President of UPS Canada. "Through our scholarship program we support higher education and encourage students to pursue their academic goals. We invest in the development of future leaders."
Since 1963, UPS has awarded scholarships to children of its employees. This year, UPS gave four scholarships in Canada, with a total commitment of up to $14,000 per year. In order to qualify for the scholarships, employees are requested to make submissions to their local centres. Entries are judged by Scholarship America, an independent external entity, who decides who will be awarded the scholarships.
As part of the emphasis on ongoing education and learning, UPS is one of the few companies that offer a tuition reimbursement program in several of its major centres. Some employees attending college or university may qualify for reimbursement of a portion or all of their tuition fees by UPS.
James E. Casey Scholarship
Katie Mattina
The James E. Casey Scholarship was named after UPS's founder and is open to children of UPS employees who plan to attend post-secondary education at a Canadian university. This year, the scholarship was awarded to Katie Mattina, daughter of Hamilton ramp worker, Joe Mattina. Katie will be attending McGill University to study Science in hopes of one day becoming a doctor. She has excelled in her high school academics and has been recognized as the Junior Citizen of the Year, the Deputy Prime Minister of McKinnon Park Secondary School (MPSS) and a Weston Loran Scholar. Katie was also the President of MPSS Student Crime Stoppers. She has shown her community involvement in Crime Stoppers Breakfast and Golf Tournament, MPSS Food Drive, Honk for Hunger and the TD Canada Trust Shoreline Clean Up.
George D. Smith Scholarship
The George D. Smith Scholarship was named after one of the company's initial founders, who was critical in navigating UPS's expansion after World War II. The scholarship is available for students enrolling in a full-time diploma program at a Canadian business school or community college in 2009. This year, the George D. Smith Scholarship was awarded to three students: Brian Bourgeois, son of Moncton customer service representative, Diane Dalling; Alexander Savoury, son of Montreal customer service representative, Wendy Robinson; and James Le-Goff, son of Montreal service provider, William Le-Goff.
Brian Bourgeois
Brian will be attending New Brunswick Community College to study Information Technology, with aspirations of working for the government. He was chosen for the award based on his outstanding commitment to academic achievements and extracurricular activities. Brian was on the honour roll at Moncton High School and received the Marie Pointer Quality of School Life Memorial Award. He is also an active participant in the Atlantic Youth Bowling team and has spent a considerable amount of time volunteering with charity fundraisers.
Alexander Savoury
Come September, Alexander will be attending Vanier College in Montreal to begin his studies in Computer Science and Mathematics. Alexander has often volunteered within his community of LaSalle for the Old Brewery Mission, the Palliative Care Residence and the Course et Marche Populaire de LaSalle Road Race. As well, Alexander received academic standing at LaSalle Community Comprehensive High School and still manages to fit in time for his after school soccer team.
James Le-Goff
The final recipient of the George D. Smith Scholarship is James Le-Goff from Montreal. James was recognized for his honour roll status, his admirable school spirit and his avid community involvement. James has participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure and also helps out during school dances and special events. James will bring his determination and hard work to Montreal's Vanier College in September, where he will begin his studies in Commerce.
