Chris Martin, a 33-year UPS veteran, has assumed command as president of the company's new and expanded North California District, directing small package operations in an area that covers northern portions of California and Nevada.
The North California District is one of 20 new Districts dividing the United States activated earlier this year. It includes the northern portions of California and Nevada serving the cities of Oakland, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose and Reno and features a package-delivery operation with some 11,000 employees.
Martin most recently served as the manager of UPS's East Bay District, which has been consolidated into the new District. She began her UPS career in 1977 as a package handler in the West New England District. She was promoted to feeder manager in 1987 in the Metro New York District. Chris was named feeder division manager in the West New England District in 1989. After assignments in hub, feeders, package, Corporate Transportation and Operations Excellence in the Metro Chicago District, she became Alabama District manager in 2000. She was named Sacramento Valley District manager in 2003.
UPS announced in January it was going to streamline its domestic management structure to improve overall performance by reducing the number of U.S. Districts from 46 to 20. Thanks to today's technology and the management strengths of its people, a District office now can oversee a much larger geographic area than in years' past.
As part of the realignment, UPS also is expanding its outreach to customers by strengthening local sales and marketing efforts. No package handling facilities have been affected by the consolidation of management offices, nor have any UPS drivers or package handlers.
