Jerry Mattes, a 33-year UPS veteran, has assumed command as president of the company's new and expanded West Region, directing small package operations in an area that covers all or parts of sixteen states.
The West Region is one of three new Regions dividing the United States activated earlier this year. It includes approximately the western third of the United States and features a package-delivery operation with some 81,000 employees.
Mattes most recently served as president of UPS's Pacific Region. He began his UPS career in 1977 as a package handler in the South New England District and after being promoted into management, moved through a series of jobs of increasing responsibility before being named manager of the Gulf South District in 1996.
UPS announced in January it was going to streamline its domestic management structure to improve overall performance by reducing the number of U.S. Regions from five to three and Districts from 46 to 20. Thanks to today's technology and the management strengths of its people, a Region office now can oversee a much larger geographic area than in years' past.
As part of the realignment, UPS also is expanding its outreach to customers by strengthening local sales and marketing efforts. No package handling facilities have been affected by the consolidation of management offices, nor have any UPS drivers or package handlers.
