On September 17, UPS Japan, hosted a special gathering for the children from Chofu Gakuen foster home to meet with Team TAISAN, the racing team which UPS supports through the international transportation of their racing car parts and equipment.
Representing Team TAISAN were team director Yasutsune Chiba, drivers Junichiro Yamashita and Kyosuke Mineo, and race queens Sayaka Nishiyama and Mayumi Morishita. Team TAISAN brought its TESLA racing car for exhibit to Chofu Gakuen.
UPS Japan also displayed a UPS package delivery truck and brought 15 staff volunteers. The event gave the children a rare opportunity not only to see the racing car and package delivery truck up close but also to ride on them. The participants also joined in drawing the display car and package truck, and playing games with UPS model slot cars.
"It's the first time I've ever seen a racing car," one of the children commented. "Drifting is cool," said another. Children who got into the driver's seat and the cargo compartment of the UPS truck were also impressed, with one saying: "The view from the truck driver's seat was higher than I expected. It was exciting!"
"I believe this collaboration between Team TAISAN and UPS have provided a memorable experience for the children. We will continue to support local communities as we grow our business in Japan," said Masato Umeno, president of UPS Japan.
Chofu Gakuen is a foster home founded in 1925 and managed by the Social Welfare Corporation Rokutoen which became a recognized facility under the Child Welfare Act of 1948. Since 2005, UPS employees have been volunteering with the foster home by holding computer classes, donating gifts and prizes for various events.
Last year, UPS Japan invited children from Chofu Gakuen to watch Team TAISAN compete in the Fuji Sprint Cup 2010 which included a visit to the team's pit garage.
