UPS North American Freight Cross-Border Backgrounder

Overview:
North American cross-border freight services have become increasingly critical for businesses, with Canada and Mexico ranking as two of the United States’ most important trade partners. The U.S. is the destination for nearly 80 percent of Canada’s exports; similarly, Canada is the single largest U.S. trade partner and the largest export market for U.S goods. And with 3,000 manufacturing plants just across the southern border, Mexico also is becoming a more important trade partner every year.

To help businesses take advantage of these cross-border opportunities, UPS offers superior northern and southern border freight services that make it the carrier of choice for customers looking to access these neighboring economies.

UPS Freight (Ground) Services:

  • Northern Border Capabilities
With its designation by both the U.S. and Canadian governments as an approved, Customs-compliant Free and Secure Trade carrier and a Customs-bonded carrier, UPS Freight can help companies expedite their freight shipments across the Canadian border. Approximately 95 percent of shipments are actually cleared before they ever reach the border through the Pre Arrival Review System (PARS) so there are no delays. In addition, UPS Freight has expedited clearance from Customs to go past border to UPS inspection centers, eliminating the need to stop and transfer freight at the border. For the small number of shipments that do not clear at the border, UPS Freight carries the freight in bond to its own facility where it will be released by Customs after clearance.

  • Southern Border Capabilities
As Mexico continues to grow as an attractive destination for companies looking to expand and lower their costs in offshore operations, UPS Freight has expanded its own border operations to serve these growing customer needs. UPS Freight understands the often complicated and cumbersome southern border clearance requirements, which means customers enjoy a streamlined experience.
