BEGAN CIP PARTICIPATION: 1968
NEW YORK CIP SITE COORDINATORS Dr. Elinor Polansky
Rafael Jaquez

DESCRIPTION:

Founded in 1893, the historic Henry Street Settlement aims to help build better lives for the residents of Manhattan’s Lower East Side community. Today, Henry Street consists of services including a community mental health clinic, battered women’s shelter, transitional residences for homeless families, child and elder care facilities, as well as arts and educational programs.

In addition, a broad spectrum of educational, employment, community service, counseling and leadership development programs for youth are all a part of the Henry Street Settlement.

The core mission of Henry Street remains to challenge the effects of urban poverty by providing essential social and cultural services to individuals and families. In addition to this mission, a primary goal is to expand educational services to help improve the academic performances of area youth. This will help provide a level playing field for job seekers.

UPS Community Internship Program participants at Henry Street work in the day care and senior centers, help youth repair bicycles at a local bike shop, feed the homeless, counsel youth at the employment center and conduct resume writing and interviewing technique workshops. During CIP, interns also work at the women’s shelter, visit the New York City court system, shadow police officers and attend community board meetings.
