International Shipments Processing System
The UPS International Shipments Processing System (ISPS) and the Operations System (OPSYS) form an integrated network designed to process and track packages moving within the company’s international shipping network. Winner of the 1991 Computerworld Smithsonian award, ISPS provides electronic shipment information directly to U.S. and Canadian customs bureaus prior to the arrival of shipments and is able to monitor the precise status and location of packages clearing customs in more than 200 countries and territories.

Architectural Structure
- Hierarchical – utilizing extensive (IBM) mainframe-based relational database (DB2) technology that supports both on-line transactions and batch processing.
- Contains remote site sub-systems based on PCs, LANs and bar code scanning technology that operate cooperatively with the central core system.
- Integral advanced technologies include package encoding/scan verification, multi-tasking PC and LAN applications, EDI and packet-switching communications.
