"Partnering with local, state, and community agencies to bring people from welfare to work has been a hallmark of UPS. The track record of UPS over the last two decades and the continued commitment to hiring former welfare recipients makes UPS a role model for the rest of corporate America ."

Eli Segal
Former President, Welfare-to-Work Partnership

UPS has been an active leader in recruiting and hiring welfare recipients for the past 25 years. Even before former President Clinton challenged the nation "to turn welfare checks into private sector paychecks," UPS was already on the front lines, visiting government and social service agencies, interviewing welfare recipients, and placing them in jobs at UPS. As one of the five founding companies in The Welfare To Work Partnership, formed in 1997, UPS has become even more active in hiring welfare recipients and in encouraging other businesses to get involved in the initiative. To date, UPS has hired almost 66,000 people off welfare.

Jobs at UPS are among the best available from companies participating in The Welfare to Work Partnership. Part-time package sorters (the position welfare-to-work hires most often fill initially) receive an average starting salary of US$8.50 - $9.50 an hour, health insurance, 401K plan, and paid vacations and holidays. The benefits package covers all UPS employees and their families and includes full health care coverage, hospitalization, medical, dental, and vision. In addition, employees are provided with short-term disability insurance, accidental death insurance, life insurance, and, in some cases, tuition assistance.

Because of its nationwide organization and strong regional operations, UPS has had an impact in helping welfare recipients become working citizens in every region of the nation. UPS has formed unique partnerships with government, social service, community, and non-profit organizations. These partnerships have proven to be successful in moving people from welfare to work – and keeping them there.

UPS also provided The Welfare to Work Partnership with a loaned executive, Rodney Carroll. As The Partnership’s Chief Operation Officer, Carroll traveled the country talking with other companies about the importance of welfare-to-work and the benefits it can bring to communities and businesses. Carroll is the former division manager of UPS’s Philadelphia Air Hub where one of UPS’s most active welfare-to-work programs operates. Rodney Carroll has since become the President of the Partnership.

UPS is continuing to expand its welfare-to-work program through partnerships with various agencies so more people can make the transition from generations of welfare to financial independence.
