| As Customer Technology Portfolio Manager for UPS, Laynglyn Capers directs the
development of all customer facing systems and products worldwide, including UPS.com,
WorldShip, package tracking, and online customer access systems. He oversees a
team of more than 650 IT professionals in three states: Georgia, Maryland and
New Jersey.
Under Capers’ leadership, UPS delivers on its strategy to provide valued-added
information products to customers that directly integrate their business processes
with those of UPS. This strategy provides customers with access to timely information
services and aligns with the company’s goal of providing the seamless
movement of goods, funds and information.
Capers began his UPS career in 1976 as a loader/unloader in the Metro New York
District. He held various management positions in operations before moving to
Corporate Information Services in 1979. As a program manager he helped develop
billing systems, tracking and delivery systems and worked on the first implementation
of UPS mainframe technology.
As Data Communications Manager, he supported implementations of the award-winning
International Shipping and Processing System (ISPS), the Total Track and DIALS
tracking systems and UPS Airline systems. In the late 1980s, Capers served as
Telecommunications Network Systems manager and responsible for global implementations
of UPSnet, development of customer access systems as well as development of
the mobile communications infrastructure for the DIAD. He was instrumental in
the formation of UPS Telecom, Inc.
Capers has held positions of increasing responsibility as EDI Services Systems
Manager and Customer Automation Systems Manager. In 1997 Capers was promoted
to Customer Automation Applications Development Manager where he directed development
of UPS.com, WorldShip and other key customer applications, including the original
package level detail (PLD) project used by UPS for its “Smart Labels.”
Capers assumed his current position in 2002.
A native of New York City, Capers attended Pace University in New York majoring
in Computer Science.
