The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS (NYSE: UPS), has donated $76,000 to the Nature Conservation Association for Tondabayashi in Osaka, Japan. The grant will be used to purchase a photovoltaic unit and a composting toilet for the "Orange Cabin," a former storage shed used to store oranges. The cabin is used by the association as their camp facility for the forest conservation activity. The association also plans to purchase a pickup truck to carry their forestry equipment.

Following the earthquake in January 2010, UPS Executive Craig Arnold went to Haiti to work on first response. As a Salvation Army local board member, Arnold volunteered in Haiti before and was familiar with the area and how to get things done. These skills, combined with his contacts at UPS, allowed Arnold to offer significant support, including the use of the UPS Trackpad technology. For Global Volunteer Month, Arnold returned for a week to revisit the areas and people he worked with in January and support the Salvation Army in the new relief projects.

In preparation for the 2010 Hurricane Season, the American Red Cross has moved critical disaster relief stock to our Disaster Field Supply Centers (DFSCs) in the hurricane prone states. The DFSCs are strategically placed throughout TX, MS, AL, GA and FL to cover the Gulf of Mexico and in NC, VA, PA and NJ to provide coverage along the East Coast. While we have made strategic decisions to position stock in our DFSCs, we still have identified high risk areas where on-site (pre-positioned) support is needed.

David Abney, chief operating officer of UPS and president of UPS Airlines, delivered the keynote address at the U.S. Department of Education's Dialogue on Global Competitiveness Conference in Washington, D.C., to an audience of leaders from the business, government and academic sectors. In his talk, Abney detailed global era priorities for an expanded national commitment to worker retraining, along with the need for a public/private educational commitment to better prepare U.S. students for global business expectations in the areas of technology, cultural awareness and languages.
