UPS Wins Final Award of China Air Rights

ATLANTA, Jan. 11, 2001 – UPS today applauded the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for the speed with which it finalized the award of direct flights to China. The company said it now will turn its attention to completing operating plans and receiving operational authority from the Chinese that would permit service to begin April 1.

The DOT announced late yesterday it had finalized an order granting UPS the right to fly directly to and from China six days a week. The tentative decision had been issued last Nov. 21.

UPS said it can improve transit times and operate more efficiently by flying directly to China versus the current routes that serve China through Hong Kong. The company will use Boeing 747 aircraft on the six weekly flights. Four of those flights will originate in Ontario, Calif., and two will originate in Newark, N.J.

UPS said it viewed China as a critical growth market and would use the new air rights to aggressively grow its business to and from that nation.

“I want to applaud Secretary Slater and the DOT staff for moving expeditiously on this matter,” said Jim Kelly, chairman and CEO of UPS. “The DOT made a 21st century visionary choice which recognizes the new economy, the benefits of competition and the role UPS plays in the global marketplace.”

UPS’s application for the China air rights received strong support from numerous businesses, labor unions and elected officials. For example, UPS’s efforts were endorsed by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the International Association of Machinists, the Independent Pilots Association, 358 members of Congress, 37 governors and more than 1,100 businesses.

UPS is the world’s largest express carrier and package delivery company, serving more than 200 countries and territories around the globe. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., UPS has been rated the World’s Most Admired mail, package and freight delivery company in a Fortune magazine survey. UPS resides on the Web at www.ups.com.
