UPS Increases Dividend by 12%
ATLANTA, Feb. 15, 2001 Calvin "Cal" Darden, senior vice president of all U.S. operations for UPS (NYSE:UPS), has been elected to the UPS Board of Directors, Chairman Jim Kelly announced today.
The election of Darden, 51, expands the UPS Board of Directors to 13 members. Darden was elected by the Board during a regularly scheduled meeting and is expected to stand for election by UPS's shareowners later this spring.
In other action, the Board today declared a quarterly cash dividend of 19 cents per share, an increase of $0.02 per share or about 12%, on all outstanding Class A and Class B shares. The Board approved the 2-cent increase based on the company's earnings growth and continued strong cash flow. The dividend is payable on March 9, 2001, to shareowners of record on Feb. 26, 2001.
Darden was named to his current post just last month, assuming responsibility for all domestic operations, including 320,000 employees and more than $24 billion in revenues. He previously had been responsible for one-half of U.S. operations. Darden joined the company's Management Committee in 1997 and is the highest-ranking African-American manager at UPS. The company's Board now includes three minorities and two women.
"Cal Darden has devoted his professional life to making this company what it is today," said Kelly. "It is due in no small measure to his efforts in the arenas of operations and customer service that Fortune magazine just recognized UPS for the 18th consecutive year as 'America's Most Admired' transportation company."
Darden, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., attended Canisius College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management in 1972. He joined UPS in 1971 as a part-time package handler and was promoted into management in 1972.
He later served as a District manager in the North Jersey, Metro New Jersey and Metro D.C. Districts, where he directed all local operations, divisions, departments and customer service. Darden later became Pacific Region manager, overseeing an area that included six states.
In 1995, Darden was named the company's first Corporate Strategic Quality Coordinator. As Quality Coordinator, Darden developed and implemented UPS’s quality strategy, focusing on customer satisfaction, employee empowerment, process improvement and effective methods of measurement.
In keeping with UPS’s long-standing commitment to the community, Darden is on the Board of Directors of the National Urban League. He also belongs to the 100 Black Men of North Metro Atlanta, is involved with the United Way and serves as a deacon at his church. He is married and has three children.
UPS, founded in 1907, is the world's largest express carrier and largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services, serving more than 200 countries and territories. In 2000, UPS generated revenues of $29.8 billion and delivered more than 3.5 billion packages and documents worldwide. Headquartered in Atlanta, the company resides on the Web at www.ups.com
