FAIRFAX, VA – The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and United Parcel Service (UPS) today announced a three-year, US$1.1 million UNCF/UPS Corporate Scholars Program that will provide scholarships and internships to African American, Hispanic, Native American and Asian American college students. Students from historically black colleges and universities, as well as majority institutions are encouraged to apply.
Beginning in spring 2001, 10 students will be chosen annually to participate in an eight- to 10-week paid internship program. During the internship, students will work on corporate projects under the guidance of a mentor at UPS facilities in Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; and Mahwah, NJ.
“I am very excited about this partnership with UPS, which will provide students with a great opportunity to obtain financial assistance and gain hands-on experience working with UPS executives,” said William H. Gray, III, president and CEO of the United Negro College Fund. “This program will be an excellent vehicle for exposing our students to the vast opportunities that exist in corporate America.”
The students, who are second-semester sophomores pursuing degrees in computer science, engineering, information technology or marketing will also receive need-based scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. The scholarships can be renewed for students who continue to meet program requirements.
“UPS’s partnership with the UNCF is part of our ongoing commitment to provide educational and workplace opportunities to our nation’s youth,” said Evern Cooper, executive director of The UPS Foundation and UPS vice president. “The skills the students acquire during the internships will be an excellent complement to their academic activities as they prepare themselves for future careers.”
