Following conclusive tests carried out in 2005, UPS boosts its fleet of environmentally friendly vehicles in the French capital
Paris, November 9, 2006 - UPS (NYSE: UPS) announced today the addition of 15 compressed natural gas vehicles to its delivery fleet in Paris and its region. The move follows positive results of a test carried out in the capital city and the Paris region in spring 2005.
These fifteen new trucks illustrate UPS's commitment to developing alternative traffic solutions, linking reliability, safety and respect for the environment. "We are delighted to add these fifteen green vehicles to our fleet. We have selected them for their remarkable environmental performance, along with proven operational effectiveness," declared Jean-François Condamine, Country manager of UPS France. "This is an excellent way for UPS to meet customer expectations for reliable and environmentally-friendly city centre deliveries," he added.
IVECO, the European leader in green gas-powered vehicles, built the vehicle based on UPS specifications. This 3.5 tonne-capacity truck represents an ideal solution to new city-centre delivery needs. Natural gas is a "clean" gas: it emits almost no dust, soot or smoke, and its combustion produces little more than water and carbonic gas vapour.
These CNG vehicles join UPS's alternative fuel fleet, which has driven over 100 million miles making deliveries to homes and businesses just since 2000. UPS has been a leader in developing and deploying alternative fuel vehicles since it launched its first such vehicle in the 1930's.
Today, UPS operates the industry's largest alternative-energy fleet, with over 1,500 trucks powered by compressed or liquefied natural gas, propane, electricity or hydrogen fuel cells. The company has invested more than $15 million in its green fleet to date. "Deploying alternative fuel trucks has allowed UPS to better manage and conserve fuel, as well as reduce emissions and its impact on the environment and operate in a more sustainable manner," said Jean-François Condamine.
UPS is the world's largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain services, offering an extensive range of options for synchronising the movement of goods, information, and funds. Headquartered in Atlanta, USA, UPS serves more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
