UPS ships relief goods, creates donation sites at UPS outlets
Mexico, November 26, 2007 – Partnering with the State of California, UPS (NYSE:UPS) provided transportation and logistics expertise to immediately assist October 27 flood victims in the State of Tabasco. By coordinating a special flight from Ontario, California to Mexico City International Airport, UPS was able to transport 47 tons of perishable goods and supplies, as well as an assortment of other much needed products during this humanitarian effort.
UPS delivered shipments donated by several businesses that consisted of ready-to-eat meals, cleaning supplies and sleeping cots. In Mexico, the national authorities collected the donated items on November 10, 2007 to immediately begin the disbursement of goods to those in need; more than 1.2 million people.
Additionally, The UPS Foundation, in coordination with the Mexican Red Cross, had six tractor trailer trucks transport 66 tons of donations to the State of Tabasco. Also, UPS has organized collection centers in Mexico throughout its 50 centers of operation and 35 Mail Boxes Etc.® stores and reunited 5 tons of donations. With this approach, UPS encourages the general public to participate in helping these flood victims. All of the contributions will be transferred by UPS and delivered directly to the Red Cross in Tabasco.
"UPS immediately moved to address the pressing needs of the Tabasco community during this very difficult time," said UPS Mexico General Manager, Griselda Hernández. "We were happy to be able to assist through our logistics expertise, and coordinate this massive delivery of essentials to these families affected by this devastation. This effort is in line with UPS's worldwide corporate philosophy of offering support to the communities in which their employees live and work."
